So, I went to a dealership for the first time in over 5 years to test drive an E89 Z4 sDrive35i, an E92 M3, and a Dodge Challenger 392 Hemi Scatpack Shaker. As I was waiting for the cars to be brought up, I perused the other cars up close and personal. Mrw...

I briefly mistook a Jetta Sportwagen for a minivan this afternoon. My eyes weren’t focusing (thanks, Sebring—I really needed that rain break just to give my head a rest!), it was up the hill from me, and it just looked bulbous in grey. Shoot, I know that’s not even a particularly big new car. Maybe it was the rear view side/back angle. I felt kinda dumb afterwards, but new cars are huge. :(

I had a couple of hours to myself today, so I went to go mess around at a CarMax.

It’s amazing how shitty a $35k car feels (pick your make/model, applies to everything). I don’t care what all of the reviewers out there say, car interiors on new cars are, by and large, crap. I even sat in a X6M...unimpressed.

Yeah... I considered buying a JSW TDI until a friend of mine (non-gearhead) asked why I was staring at a minivan on my computer. I told him what it actually was, and then he told me what it actually was.

And unfortunately that was that.

But hell, even the Z4 felt a lot bigger than what I was expecting. Gone are the days of the clownshoes. Sadface, indeed.

I find that CarMax tends to inflate their prices by about 15%, so that may have something to do with it. That’s mainly why I’m trying to avoid them for my car buying this go around.

I’m not an interior aficionado like most people are; just a meat and potatoes guy. (even had to ask the sales dude if the Z4 seats were electronic... kinda embarrassed about that.)

But even I can agree, the newer BMWs really didn’t feel like anything to write home about.

I drove my wife’s Kia soul for the first time in forever and after only driving the NB it felt absolutely huge. And the Kia is small when parked next to most new cars.

I always post this picture when this discussion is renewed on Oppo:

My car is a premium station wagon from the 90s and the i3 is a modern small runabout.

Sure, the picture is a bit misleading because my car is considerably longer, but modern cars are higher in general and the design is way more bulky.

We all think old American iron is big as well, and while my cousin’s Cougar is about as long and wide as my Bimmer (which is of course huge for a two door coupe) it is also very low and looks almost fragile next to a new Passat or 5 series.
